Nm2208 class exercise E

In this class exercise, we had to use lines and dots to try to express certain words that were given to us.  Andrea and I chose the words ‘Fear’ and ‘Chaos’.

The huge thing is actually suppose to be some scary monster trying to eat the small thing on the bottom left hand corner which is suppose to be a tiny fearful creature.  We used straight, angular and stiff lines to portray angst of the monster and curvy smooth lines to portray fear of the tiny creature (We were trying to tap on the idea that your lines turn jelly when you’re scared).

n this picture, we were trying to show two people arguing with each other and thus causing chaos.  The two black triangular things are suppose to represent heads and again, we used straight, stiff and angular lines to portray the angst that both parties have.  The colourful mess all over the picture is suppose to represent the exchange of unpleasant words between both of them.

Nm2208 class exercise D

For Class Exercise D, we had to experiment with different camera angles which could possibly affect the feel of a photograph.  I went to Andrea’s house for this assignment and we took pictures of the potted plant outside her house.

General View to allow the audience to establish some background information about the plant (e.g. What is this plant? Where is the potted plant situated at? What is its overall look of this plant?)

High Angle Shot. I would say that this is a mid-shot from a high angle (from the perspective of a human looking down at the plant or a flying insect).

Low Angle Shot to make the plant seem “high and mighty” (Perhaps from the perspective of an insect on the floor?).

Point-of-View Shot to reflect what an insect would probably see if it landed on that leaf on the bottom of the picture.

Close-up Shot to highlight the funky and weird details of the plant’s middle point.

Another Close-up Shot to showcase the funky and furry looking lines at the bottom of the leaf.

Nm2208 class exercise C

Class Exercise C was all about the process of abstraction.  Andrea and I decided to make use of a parking coupon we found at the lecture theatre seat next to us.

Parking coupon we picked up from the lecture theatre

Below’s the abstraction process:

Abstraction process: Step 1

In this step, we changed the lion symbol to a simple oval shape, and removed the texts from the top, bottom, right side and in the boxes.  We removed the grey-ish parking symbol that was in the background in the ‘Day’ box.

Abstraction Process: Step #2

Here, we got rid of even more redundant texts and boxes.

Abstration Process: Step #3

We removed all the numbers from the small perforated circles.

Abstraction Process: Step #4

The huge boxes that bounded the perforated circles were removed.  We reduced the number of circles and also coloured a few circles to let it seem like some of numbers were torn off the parking coupon already.

Abstraction Process, Step #5

In this final abstraction, we deleted even more perforated circles to just 4 circles and enlarged them.  The perforated circles are kind of the main “feature” of a parking coupon and thus we wanted to bring more attention to it.  As seen in all the various steps, we removed all the redundant boxes but kept the 50¢ box there all along.  We felt that if it was removed, the final abstraction would look like a domino block.  Afterall, a parking coupon is somehow an indirect way of making payment and hence, we decided to retain a money-element in our final abstraction.

Nm2208 Assignment 1: Design Process

Below are four sketches that I came up with for the Assignment 1. Assignment 1 required us to come up with 4 sketches and 2 roughs of designs which represented who we are.

Sketch 1. Love for writing

I enjoy writing articles, especially for magazine articles. I find it extremely liberating and therapeutic. I incorporated the letters to my name with newspaper templates. I also drew a typewriter with the alphabets flying out to suggest how much I enjoy writing.

Sketch 2. Engrossed when doing something

Whenever I do something, I get really engrossed in it. It doesn’t only apply to things that I have interests in, but any activities in general. When i make up my mind to do something. I will go through with it till the end. The sketch below consists of my name and swirls in it. The swirls is supposed to represent ‘hypnosis’ stage that I get into whenever I’m immersed in whatever I’m doing.

Sketch 3. Love for Technology

Technology is a big part of my life. Many of my old activities that I religiously carried out in the past, such as watching television, reading newspapers and many more have been replaced by the wonders of technology. Now, I cannot live a day without checking Twitter, Yahoo! News, Facebook and many more. Below are representations of technological things that I am unable to live without.

Sketch 4. Calm and Collected Attitude

I am a generally calm and collected person. I do not get flustered or stressed very easily. I am an optimistic person who believes that things will always work out as long as I give it my all. Below is supposed to be a design which incorporated the element of wind and my name.

Calm and Collected Attitude

Calm and Collected Attitude

I decided to go ahead with the ‘engrossed’ concept and further develop it into ‘Immersed’ and ‘Hypnotized’. Both generally mean the same thing, where I get so engrossed in doing things that I get so immersed in my thoughts that my mind gets sucked into this never ending abyss of hypnosis.

Rough 1. Immersed

This design incorporates two words – ‘Immersed’ and my name, ‘Shireen’. The idea behind this comes from the idea that I get extremely immersed in thoughts when I  am carrying out activities. The setting is under water, and the two words are supposed to be enclosed within a diving goggle. This is a literal representation of the word ‘Immersed’. The colours I’ve chosen to use are neutral shades of black and white. I did not use bright colours because I wanted to emphasize the dullness of hypnosis and bright colours may distract the audience from focusing on the deep meaning behind this design.

Rough 2: Hypnosis

The design below is an incorporation of the vision one sees when he is hypnotized and my name. This incorporation stems from the idea that this is what goes through my mind whenever I am carrying out activities. Again, it is black and white to aid in the optical illusion effect of this design.
